Recruit Holdings Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Masumi Minegishi) announced today that its empirical research institute, Media Technology Labs, has released hew.io as a library search service for software engineers in countries and regions outside of Japan. With this new hew.io service, Recruit will provide an environment that promotes smoother software development for software engineers located not only in Japan but also in other parts of the world.
1. Background of hew.io development
Today, a wide variety of web services and smartphone apps are being developed around the world. Associated with this recent trend is the wide availability of open source libraries, which are tools that are needed for software development. To date, however, engineers who were searching for an appropriate library needed to consider a website's intended purpose and reputation in order to determine whether it fulfilled their development needs.
Against this backdrop, Media Technology Labs developed hew.io as a library search service to reduce the required time and effort, allowing engineers to easily locate and find the right library for their needs.
2. Three features offered by hew.io
1. Support for numerous development environments
As of March 31, 2014, the hew.io service allows engineers to search for iOS, Android, and JavaScript libraries. Going forward, support will be added for other development environments based on user request, creating a service that can be used by software engineers specializing in a wide variety of platforms and technologies.
2. Wide range of categories
hew.io covers more than 3,000 libraries and classifies them into more than 80 categories according to development environment, minimizing the time needed to look for the appropriate library.
3. Extensive metadata
With the hew.io service, engineers can use the GitHub API to retrieve and view library information. This allows users to determine whether a particular library is suitable from hew.io without the need to visit other websites.
